Is your local Green Flag park the nation’s favourite? Vote now!

Posted on 04/08/2010

How much do you love your local Green Flag-award winning park? If you’ve not already voted for your favourite Green Flag park or green space in the search to find the nation’s favourite – show your support and give it your vote today!

Keep Britain Tidy is looking to discover the ‘People’s Choice’ site of the year Green Flag park or green space by the middle of this month – so if you’re a fan of the Rochdale borough’s Green Flag parks and green spaces then give it your vote!

Up to now, Queen’s Park in Heywood has consistently been leading the national league table, closely followed by Hare Hill Park in Littleborough. But to remain in poll position they need your votes!

The easiest way to vote is to go to www.rochdale.gov.uk/parks and click on the name of the park you want to vote for to take you through to the Keep Britain Tidy voting page. The site that gets the most votes by the middle of this month will receive a special award at the Green Flag Award Scheme’s annual awards ceremony in October.

Councillor Irene Davidson, Leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “It just goes to show how much people love our parks.

“By having two of our parks at the top of the tree - out of all the Green Flag spaces in the country – is a real testament to the people who go out and enjoy our parks and the dedication that friends groups and council staff devote to making them truly excellent.”

On Wednesday 28 July, it was announced the Rochdale borough had achieved eight coveted Green Flag awards - the national benchmark for parks and green space excellence.

Seven of the borough’s parks have retained their Green Flag statuses, whilst Middleton Cemetery was welcomed into the borough’s parks elite for the first time.

The Rochdale borough’s Green Flag-awarded parks and green spaces are listed below by township area:

Rochdale

● Broadfield Park

● Rochdale Memorial Gardens

● Packer Spout Gardens

Heywood

● Queen’s Park

Middleton

● Truffet Park, Langley

● Middleton Cemetery, Boarshaw

Pennines

● Hare Hill Park, Littleborough

● Milnrow Memorial Gardens

A Keep Britain Tidy initiative, the Green Flag scheme was introduced in 1996 and was inspired by the Blue Flag scheme for clean beaches. Awards are given every year to parks and green spaces that are welcoming, safe and well-maintained with strong community involvement and regard for conservation, sustainability and heritage.
