Head for heights? Rochdale Town Hall abseil returns

THE BIG DROP: Leon Hollinrake begins his abseil last year.

Thrill seekers from across the region have another chance to get a bird’s eye view of Rochdale and raise cash for a good cause this September – when the famous Town Hall clock tower stages a charity abseil.

Plucky participants will need a head for heights, climbing to the top of the iconic 190-ft stone tower before descending by rope.

The event, part of Rochdale Feel Good Festival on Saturday 5 September, has been organised by the charity Number One Riverside – Giving Back. The charity was established in 2013 by council staff committed to raising money for local causes.

All the money raised will go to foodbanks in Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton, providing emergency food for people in crisis across the borough.

Trustee of Number One Riverside – Giving Back, Helen Leach said:

“Last year the response was overwhelming and we were able to raise over £8,000.  I’m really pleased that we’re able to do it again and hope to be able to raise another significant amount for a very good local cause. As always places are limited, so please get in touch now to book your abseil.”

To secure a place on the abseil which runs from 8am until 2.30pm on Saturday 5 September email abseil@rochdale.gov.uk There is a registration fee of £20 per person which will go direct to the charities. You also need to commit to raising at least £50 in sponsorship. Information and sponsor forms will be provided, as well as details of an abseiling taster session for those involved!

Rochdale Feel Good Festival returns on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September, for another incredible showcase of entertainment, food and culture. There will be live music across indoor venues a main stage sponsored by The Flying Horse Hotel and Stage 2 - a second outdoor stage showcasing local acts.

The summer festival is funded by Rochdale Borough Council with sponsorship from local businesses including Hopwood Hall College, The Flying Horse Hotel, Rochdale Football Club, o2 Rochdale, Balfour Beatty Living, Link4Life and The Royal Toby.
