Festive fever! Town hall sparkles for Rochdale’s Christmas switch on

GUESTS: The Mayor and Mayoress were joined by Olaf, Anna and Elsa at Rochdale Town Hall.

Festive fever spread to Rochdale this weekend as the countdown to Christmas started with the lights switch-on and a dazzling fireworks display at the town hall.

Over 2,300 people attended the council-organised event which featured a festive market in the Great Hall, live entertainment, food and drink. The town hall was the biggest festive light of them all - lit in spectacular moving colours especially for the occasion.

Amongst the activities were story-time and craft sessions for children and guest appearances by Frozen characters Olaf, Elsa and Anna. Seasonal food and drink was served along with performances by Rochdale Music Service and Wardle Community Brass Band who entertained a packed Great Hall with Christmas classics!  An outdoor food court served welcome hot food and mulled wine for those braving the elements waiting for the switch on.

As the town hall clock struck five, Mayor Councillor Ian Duckworth and Mayoress Christine Duckworth appeared on the balcony to introduce Olaf, Anna, Elsa and Father Christmas before counting down to the switch on.

The Mayor said: “The crowd were fantastic, and the town hall has been so busy. I hope to see everyone back in the town centre over the next few weeks supporting our fabulous local businesses.”

As the lights were switched on, the sky came alive again with a fireworks display.

Events Manager Sue Milne added:

“As it went dark, the lights started twinkling and the town hall lit up creating a lovely atmosphere and it was great to see so many families enjoying themselves.  I would like to thank all the local businesses who took part, our performers, Broadfield Park School for the use of the playground and everyone who came along and supported us.”
