Condolence book for Polish air crash victims

Posted on 15/04/2010

A book of condolence has been opened at Rochdale Town Hall for residents and visitors to record messages of sympathy following the tragic death of the Polish National Leader, President Lech Kaczynski. Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria were among 96 people killed on Saturday in a plane crash.

The aircraft went down while trying to land in dense fog at Smolensk in western Russia. All aboard were killed, including Kaczynski and dozens of Polish political, military and religious leaders.

The Polish delegation was flying in from Warsaw to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre of thousands of Poles by Soviet forces during WWII.

The Mayor Councillor Keith Swift said: "My thoughts are with the families of those who died in this terrible disaster, and I send the heartfelt sympathies of our borough to the local Polish community and to the nation of Poland."

Anyone wanting to sign the book is welcome to visit the town hall between 8am – 6.30pm, Monday to Friday.
